Learning to Sail Catamarans
What is a catamaran vs a beach cat vs a multihull?
- A catamaran is a sailboat which has two hulls.
- A beach cat is a catamaran which is launchable from a beach. Usually less than 21 feet in length, sizes usually range from 12 to 21 feet in length.
- A multihull means a sailboat with many hulls. This could be a catamaran, with two hulls, or a trimaran, with three hulls.
What is it all about?
Youth programs..
Fast and Fun Sailing, US Sailing
Youth Sailing Program of the United States Sailing Association. Sponsored by the Multihull Council and US Windsurfing. Intended to provide a vision of sailing possibilities for children ages 8-12. The program has five Hobie Waves and five Mistral Windgliders. These vessels are easy for beginning sailors and simple for instructors to teach with. Fast and Fun attends several US SAILING sponsored Junior Olympic and other events during the year along the eastern seaboard from Florida to New Jersey.
I want to learn to sail a beach cat, where do I start?
Basic principles of sailing apply to all boats. For example what you learn sailing dinghies is the same as what you would do on multihulls or keelboats. A great way to start is to take dinghie lessons, which tend to be alot easier to find. My recommendation is to check yacht clubs in your area.
Another option is to contact your local fleet. Fleet Commodore's can sometimes point you in the right direction. Go to the Divisions section of this website and look up your area (state, province or country). E-mail or phone the fleet Commodore closest to you.
Local multihull sailboat dealers will sometimes have information on other options.
| Webmistress has been compiling lists of places where multihull, specifically beach cat lessons are offered. If you know of a site, please let me know. Want your site listed? E-mail webmistress.
