Sailors receive Hobie Youth Grants in 2006

Congratulations to Sam Ingham, Marie Appel,  Erin McNeil,
Jordan Ashley, Justin Ashley, Erin Laporta and Mike Siau. This group of teenagers were each able to secure a Grant from the Hobie Class Association of North American. The purpose of the Youth Grant is to assist Junior and Youth sailors in attending Championship Hobie Cat events.

The Teens are thrilled with the vote of confidence the class is showing towards them.  The letters they write are full of excellent reasons why Hobie racing is where its at; “As a member of the Hobie Cat Association for a number of years, I have gained many life long friendships, and learned the sport of sailing, not only from experience but from the other members of the Association,” says Erin McNeill from Canada. Erin Laporta from Division 11 “compete(s) because I am very passionate about sailing;” Sam Ingham, a New York State Optimist Champion, is practically forming his own fleet; “So far I have brought everyone from the Brighton Sailing Team to sail Hobie Cats at least once and they have all had a great time. They all want one!”

The Grants are made possible from the generous donations from the Class membership.  The amount of information and paperwork required for this years Grants was relaxed due to lack of requests.  “The idea is to show monetary support for our Hobie kids,” says Mimi Appel, Youth Program Coordinator.  “Both the Board of Directors and general membership have made it very clear, we want to invest in the future of the Hobie Class.”

Teens and juniors that are already planning on attending the 2007 Hobie 16 Youth Championships, on July 20-22, in Geneva, NY, may want to submit Grant requests early.  West coast sailors could use the money to help pay for plane fare.  Juniors that are considering the 16 Worlds in Fiji, or any of 16,17,18 or Tiger major events should start the planning to make a HCA Youth Grant work for them! Requirements for the Grant are on the Class web site at
www.hcana.hobieclass.com click on Grants under Youth menue  and are continually posted in the Hotline.  Questions, email Laura Sullivan mslauras@earthlink.net or MimiAppel@aol.com
