Hobie Getaway Specifications

Hobie Getaway
Production start date: December 2000
Currently in production

New to 2001, the Getaway is the big brother to the Wave.
Similar in concept to the Hobie Wave (the Hobie Wave was designed by Melvin and Morelli), Greg Ketterman of Hobie Cat USA enlarged the design from 13 feet to 16 feet 7 inches, and then slammed on so many features, it has become irresistable to the recreational sailor.

Features such as:

  • forward tramp
  • jib that comes standard
  • furling unit for the jib
  • huge volume that causes tremendous forward bouyancy in the hulls virtually eliminates the risk of pitchpoling (I know, I know, someone will somehow manage to do it - now it is a challenge)
  • cooler units built into each hull - open the hatch cover and low and behold, a cooler ready for ice and beverages (non-alcoholic, of course) with a smaller hatch to render access to the inside of the hull below
  • 900 pounds of carrying capacity - friends, just pack 'em on!

Similar to the Wave

  • it is boomless, but has a rounded cut to the mainsail to give even more head clearance
  • the Bob at the top of the mast, for safety, to avoid turtling

Upgrades

  • trapeze kit (single trapeze)
  • Sport wings (not back rests, but real wings)

Things to note
It is not light, 390 pounds, because of all of the add-ons, and that tremendous volume in the hulls.
It does not disassemble, 16' 7' of hull length is not really recommended for car-topping, but more importantly, this is the performance version of rotomoulded Hobies - Ketterman wanted to give a luxury performance option to our current Wave owners.

Recognize Patsy Schaefer and Greg Thomas (our 2000 Hobie 20 Continental champion) in the pictures? Taken in Key Largo in December methinks...
